The words of the Bot Builder

Part I uses everyday words for what the agent does, each with one meaning throughout:

  • Agent: what you declare in agent.yaml or with Agent(...): its tools, its model, its rules, and the agents it may hand a conversation to (chapter 30).
  • Tool: a function, an MCP server's tool or an OpenAPI operation the agent may call, with the words that say what it does (chapter 30).
  • Turn: one message from a person, and everything the agent does in answer to it.
  • Run: what the agent does from a turn to its reply: each tool call, and each undo where it fails (chapter 34).
  • Confirmation: a call that waits for a person's yes, showing each argument and where its value came from (chapter 35).
  • Undo: the tool that reverses another's write, declared with undo= (chapter 34).
  • Hand-off: one agent passing the conversation to another it names (chapter 30).
  • The selector: the part of the Bot Builder that reads each turn and chooses the tool by a named rule, with no model call (chapter 20).
  • The tool check: what every call is checked against before it runs (chapter 32).
  • Finding: something the bug hunter found, with the rule it breaks, where, a reproduction and a fix (chapter 28).
  • Witness: the run, step by step, that shows a finding happening (chapter 31).
